A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) is preventive maintenance for healthy gums, removing plaque and tartar from above the gumline during your routine six-month visit. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is a therapeutic treatment for patients with gum disease, where plaque and bacteria have accumulated below the gumline in periodontal pockets. Deep cleaning involves numbing the area and thoroughly cleaning beneath the gums to remove infection and smooth root surfaces, allowing gums to reattach and heal. During your exam, Dr. Beke will measure your gum pocket depths and assess your gum health to determine which type of cleaning you need. If you maintain regular six-month visits and good home care, you can typically avoid needing deep cleanings.
Dental X-rays are essential diagnostic tools that reveal problems you can’t see or feel yet. They detect cavities between teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach, show decay beneath existing fillings, identify bone loss from gum disease, reveal infections at tooth roots, and detect cysts, tumors, or other abnormalities in the jaw. Many serious dental problems develop without symptoms until they’re advanced and require more extensive (and expensive) treatment. X-rays allow Dr. Beke to catch these issues early when treatment is simpler and more conservative. We follow evidence-based guidelines for X-ray frequency, typically taking a full set every 3-5 years and bite-wing X-rays annually or as needed. Our digital X-rays also use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays.
Preventing cavities requires consistent daily care at home. Brush twice daily for two minutes using fluoride toothpaste, paying attention to all tooth surfaces and along the gumline. Floss once daily to remove plaque and food particles from between teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach—this is where most adult cavities form. Limit sugary and acidic foods and beverages, especially sipping them throughout the day, as frequent acid exposure weakens enamel. Drink plenty of water, which helps rinse away food particles and neutralizes acids. If you’re prone to cavities despite good hygiene, Dr. Beke may recommend additional preventive measures like prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste, fluoride treatments at your cleanings, or dental sealants to protect vulnerable chewing surfaces. Regular six-month checkups also allow us to remove hardened tartar that brushing can’t eliminate and catch any small cavities before they grow.
